Abstract
The nutritional assessment of the pregnant woman before and during pregnancy is considered an important factor in maternal and child health. An inadequate nutritional status can increase perinatal complications, contributing to an increase in maternal and infant morbidity and mortality. For this reason, the present work aims to determine the association that exists between pregestational maternal BMI and the birth of small-for-gestational age newborns attended at the Iquitos Hospital, July-December 2019. An analytical-type study was carried out. observational (cases and controls). 230 patients (115 cases and 115 controls) were selected. Concluding that there is no statistically significant association between the birth of newborns small for gestational age and mothers with low pregestational age (p> 0.05). The existence of a statistically significant association between the birth of newborns small for gestational age and the history of mothers with a high pregestational body mass index (p> 0.05) was also not demonstrated.
