Abstract
experimental, descriptivo, correlacional, transversal.
materna (p=0,007; p<0,05).
Breastfeeding is one of the most effective ways to provide the nutrients needed for the healthy growth and development of infants, with beneficial effects on the health of the mother and the family as well. In this context, the research was carried out with the objective of determining the association between the knowledge about breastfeeding and success at the beginning of breastfeeding, in mothers in the immediate postpartum period, attended at the hospital gynecological obstetrics service III Essalud, Puchana 2016. The quantitative method, non-experimental, descriptive, correlational, transverse design was used. The population was 150 mothers and the sample of 80, applying two instruments for the collection of data, the Knowledge Questionnaire on breastfeeding, with a validity of 89,48% and reliability of 86% and the record of the beginning of Breastfeeding with validity of 98,21% and reliability of 81,9%. The statistical program was SPSS, version 22 for Windows XP, with a 95% confidence level and significance level of 0,05 (p < 0,05) to accept the hypothesis. The nonparametric free Chi square test (X2) was used, obtaining as a result: at knowledge level on breastfeeding of mothers after delivery: 46,2% had high knowledge, 40,0% average knowledge and 13, 8% low; In success at initiation of breastfeeding in the mothers was 61,2% (the newborn breastfed in the first hour or within the first 24 hours) and 38,8% did not initiate breastfeeding even within the first 24 hours. When associating both variables, a statistically significant association was obtained between the knowledge level and success at the onset of breastfeeding (p = 0,007, p < 0,05).
