Abstract
The present study aimed to determine the antioxidant potential of leaf and bark extracts of Dendropanax umbellatus. An experimental and analytical design was employed, using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method to assess their antioxidant capacity. Samples were collected at kilometer 22 of the Iquitos – Nauta highway, subsequently dried, ground, and spectrophotometrically analyzed at 517 nm. The results showed that both extracts exhibited inhibitory capacity with similar inhibition percentages; however, the bark demonstrated higher antioxidant activity, equivalent to Trolox, compared to the leaves. None of the extracts reached an IC₅₀ value within the evaluated range (1 to 15 mg/mL), indicating moderate antioxidant activity. It is concluded that D. umbellatus does not present significant antioxidant activity at the analyzed concentrations. Nevertheless, the bark stands out as a potential source rich in bioactive metabolites. Factors such as phytochemical composition and environmental conditions could influence the observed antioxidant capacity.
