Abstract

The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of the type of diet supplied on the physical development of yellow-spotted river turtles (Podocnemis unifilis) in a controlled environment, Loreto, 2025. A true experimental design with two parallel groups was used: T1 (diet based on water lettuce, Pistia stratiotes) and T2 (diet based on purigamitana, a commercial balanced feed). Forty juvenile turtles were evaluated over six months (March to September), recording six biometric indicators weekly: mean curved height of the carapace, dorsal length, ventral length, dorsal width, ventral width, and total body weight. Normality (Shapiro-Wilk) and homoscedasticity (Levene) assumptions were verified; Student's t-test for independent samples and Mann-Whitney U test were applied as appropriate. Results showed statistically significant differences (p < 0.001) between both diets in all variables. The purigamitana-based diet achieved a higher final mean total body weight (38.068 g vs. 26.909 g; d = 4.192), dorsal length (8.055 cm vs. 6.795 cm; d = 4.439), ventral length, dorsal width, and ventral width. It is concluded that the type of diet supplied significantly influences the physical development of turtles, with purigamitana being more effective for overall growth.
